Our Home in Arugam Bay

It's not very often that you find the "PERFECT" guesthouse.
A place that just works on every conceivable level.
We found that at Beach Hut.
Whilst we loved it the first time we stayed, after a further 10 days there over SriLankan new years,  it is now more like home to us than just a guesthouse.

The restaurant.
I mean, just look at it! Ramshackled bungalows built from driftwood, wooden canoes and other random objects, set just 50 metres off the beach in a super lush garden!?!
Location -PERFECT

Gypsy with Kuna (left) and Thass (right). I honestly think Gypsy and Thass were deeply in love....
Then there is the staff. Kuna and Thass and the rest of the team were just so awesome. They not only took super good care of us, but they adored Gypsy and she too loved them. They are such nice guys and, even at their busiest point, were never too busy for a joke, or a "friendly" reminder that someone (usually Daniel) was still waiting on a beer.
Staff - PERFECT

The boys place - aka Hammock ville!
The rooms I hear you ask?
They have such a huge variety, from tiny bungalows with only room for a mattress, to deluxe bungalows with inside bathrooms. We stayed in some cement bungalows with inside bathroom and private garden for a mere 1000 ($8) rupees. The cheapest room is a crazy 300 rupees!! ($2)
Some rooms are right on the beach while others (like ours) are back near the restaurant.
Oh, and yes there are even hammocks! Or if you like, you can go across to the tailor across the road and buy one, or get one custom made in Pottuvil for between 1300-2000 rupees ($11-18).
Rooms - PERFECT

Some of the awesome Arugam Bay crew that kept us sane during our 10 day stint!
But hows the atmosphere?
Beach hut is one of those places where people just mingle. The communal dinners are a big part of this (delicious and cheap I might add!). But, the vibe there is just so chilled out that people just want to talk to each other. As you arrive, with backpack on, you will be greeted by every person at the restaurant - Hey! Where did you come from? Where are you from? Come join us later!
We made some amazing friends, some truly special people that we really hope we will be able to cross paths with again.
Drinks were shared, meals were shared, samosa-runs were made, shopping trips were shared, jokes were shared, youtube videos were shared, karum was played, and played and played again, and many many memories were made.
Atmosphere - PERFECT

I don't have a picture of food to share, so here is an adorable photo of Gypsy playing in a bucket.
And finally there is the food.
The food is a great mixture of western and local foods, but it's cooked really well!
And it's cheap!! Almost as cheap as eating on the street!! Which is great news, because the restaurant area is so comfy it's really easy to get really really lazy...
We went out for breakfast to one of the little restaurants on the street and had 3 paratha and dahl for 100 rupees. Sometimes we ventured out for lunch as well. Sometimes we didn't.. Dinner we didn't.. The food is cooked super quick as well so were able to wait until Gypsy was really hungry before ordering.
Oh, and you can buy "fantastick" ice-creams just at the end of the street!
Food - PERFECT
And so on our scale of 1- 10, Beach hut scores a PERFECT.
We hope you will love it just as much if you find yourself in Sri Lanka and needing somewhere to call home for a while.
But be warned.
NOBODY leaves when they originally planned to. "I'll just stay 1 more day..."
