TRAVELLING ON THE CHEAP – PRACTICAL TIPS PER COUNTRY
The first step to planning a holiday is deciding where to go.
If you are looking for inspiration, try reading our blogs to see what we did in each place, what we liked and what we really didn't like.
If you already have an idea of where you want to go, below you will find links to practical travel tips for each of the countries we have visited, to hopefully make you decision to go a little bit easier.
Packing practically yet light is difficult for even the most experienced traveller - even now it is a constant battle to downsize. Click here for a sneak peak inside our backpacks as well as a list of absolute essentials that we simply could not travel without.
Depending on the country, finding a reputable, reasonably priced tour guide is the first step. For a list of tour guides that we have used and recommend, click here. (Note, not all guides we have used are listed – only those that we are not afraid to recommend!)
No two countries are the same, and no two people travel the same. As you travel you naturally adapt to that environment and learn the tricks of the trade, and naturally different people will have different opinions.
The most common question that we get asked is “How can you afford to travel for as long as you do?” The answer is both simple and difficult at the same time. Travelling practically within each country and sticking to a budget. Sure it sounds easy, but sometimes it really isn't.
We hope that by reading these tips for each of the countries we have visited that you can learn from our “trial and error.” Whilst there is a lot of information out there regarding expected costs, we find it is usually not relevant to our style of travel, or that it is extremely vague. So we have included exactly how much we spent per country and the currency conversion at that time to help you make your own budgets.
Under each country you will find information about transportation, border crossings, costs, cheap tips, drinking water, beer, food, shopping and a complete list of accommodations we stayed at. Obviously things change, so please do not take this information as gospel.
[at bottom: This is a work in progress so if there is any other information you would like us to include, please let us know. [link to feedback page]]
