10 unexpected reverse-culture shocks after travelling in India

1-    Everything is SO clean
Like, crazily clean. It’s refreshing, and beautiful, but I also worry I’m going to be pounced on if I accidentally drop a piece of paper from my pocket..
2-    There is toilet paper everywhere
Every public toilet has toilet paper! For FREE!? Gone are the bidet hoses, squat toilets and secret stashes of toilet paper in your bag just in case..

3-    Everything is so expensive
Seriously, FOUR DOLLARS for a cup of chai? And it’s not even chai. It's disgusting vaguely indian spice flavoured milk tea with too much milk. And did I mention how expensive it is? No more 5 rupee street corner chai.

4-    People obey the road rules
Cars actually stay in their lanes, and use indicators, and (mostly) follow the speed limit, and there actually IS A speed limit. Even when the train has passed and the rail beams are being raised, people WAIT for them to be completely up and for the red light to stop flashing before moving. Wow.

5-    Shopping centres and malls are everywhere
The western world really does have an obsession with shopping. Shopping malls and shopping centres are everywhere and are a place to go to have fun. And did I mention how expensive everything is?

6-    Where are everybody’s clothes?
After seeing men and women fully clothed in saris or kurta, or long pants and a shirt, it is quite a shock to see so many people walking around in short shorts and skin tight clothing! I just want to run up and throw sarongs over everybody.

7-    Indian food is terrible!
After eating so much delicious and cheap Indian food, coming back home to menus that only serve non-veg options, and then only the standard four or five meals, is shocking! Not a Dosa or a Paneer Butter Masala in sight..

8-    Nobody cares about you anymore.
What? You don’t want my photo? But why not? Everybody in India wanted to be photographed with me…..

9-    There are so many rules.
You can’t cross the road without a walk light. You can’t get on the bus except at a designated bus stop. You have to queue up even to just ask a simple question. You can’t get on the bus if all the seats are taken. You have to wear a seatbelt. You have to actually have a license to drive. Kid’s have to sit in their own special seat – and can’t help to drive.

10-  People don’t appreciate it when you try to barter with them.
Even though there are no “fixed price” signs, you get stared and glared at if you try to barter.. “I think $3 is too much for this bottle of water. I’ll give you $1.50. Good for you, good for me”. … Okay, I’ll leave now.
