You meet so many people when you are in the middle of nowhere. Roh and I play a little game sometimes – we try to guess whether the next vehicle we see will be a truck/ caravan/ motorhome/ backpacker van/ car or other.
As soon as we left Port Augusta in South Australia we pretty much only saw the first 4. Mostly Caravans. For say every 10 caravans we will see 3 motorhomes, 1 backpacker van and 1 truck. There are a lot of grey nomads out there! We never realised just how many there were!!
If you freecamp especially, you quite often run into the same people every couple of days. It’s a lovely way to get to meet people.
Some travel simply.
Others travel at the complete opposite of simple.
It’s really interesting to see what each other considers an “essential” amount to travel with.
We once saw a truck (like a woolworths truck) with a smart car inside it, towing a caravan just as long as the truck with a boat on top of it. I kid you not. For TWO people.
I can’t even imagine how I would fill either the truck or the caravan let alone both! But good on them. At least they are travelling and doing what they want to do. I can’t even imagine how much their petrol bills must be!
We met a young couple who had converted an old horse float into a house! It was pretty amazing inside with the hitching post still there!
We met some backpackers with a van complete with disco lights, surf boards, kitchenette and dog!
We met a couple who had built an 1970s style tear-drop caravan themselves! It was super adorable and super compact and they really had put so much energy into it. They even bought an old car to tow it!
We met a young family travelling in a really long caravan. And we met a young family travelling in a Kombi and sleeping in tents.
It really is so diverse, the way everyone choses to travel.
I’d like to say no 2 setups are the same, but some actually are. There’s a peculiar phenomenon we’ve stumbled across with some grey nomads who travel together in groups. Much like some couples like to dress together, some of these groups like to match their vans and sometimes even their cars! The biggest such convoy we saw was 4 identical cars (all white) towing 4 identical caravans! I’d love to know why!?!
Actually I’d just love to stop and talk to everyone and maybe take a sneak peak inside their setups! I’m a bit of a busy body like that. lol
But ultimately, it’s just so great that so many people are out travelling and enjoying this beautiful country we have!
If you happen to see us on the road, say hi! We'd love to meet you!
