How to find a shower when free-camping

NED does have a shower, but it’s rather a hassle to use, and we don’t carry a great amount of water with us so we try to find showers on the road where we can.

It might seem like a good hot shower is nowhere to be seen, but they are there, you just need to know where to look!

Tip 1 – Truck stop petrol stations
Truck drivers drive for loooong hours. As such some “truck stop” petrol stations will offer a range of facilities. Some have free hot showers, some you might need to pay a couple of dollars to use, but as a rule of thumb, if you see trucks parked up, you can bet there is a hot shower awaiting you inside! Oh, and nearly always the womens showers are much cleaner than the mens. :p

Tip 2- Swimming pools
Before swimming and after swimming people take showers! And surprisingly, swimming pools are usually more than happy for you to use them! One place we visited charged $4per person, yet a different place was by gold coin donation. Also, if you are travelling with a little person like we are, it’s a great excuse to take some time out from travelling and have a bit of fun too!

Nb. In the colder months not all pools are open, try google searching for an indoor swimming pool in the area you are in.

Tip 3 – Information centres
I know I can sometimes feel shy asking where I can get a shower from but that’s what the volunteers at the information centres are there for! They can almost always point you in the right direction and if they can’t, will sometimes even go as far as to call the information centre in the next place you intend to visit to enquire there on your behalf. So don’t be shy!

Tip 4 – Caravan parks
If you are truly desperate, try asking at one of the caravan parks. The bigger chain parks like Big 4 will almost always say no, but the smaller family run places will usually let you have a shower for a small cost.

Tip 5 – Wikicamps
I’ve raved about the wikicamps app before and I’m pretty sure I’ll rave about it again. It’s amazing. If all of the above fail, try narrowing your wikicamps search down to “free” and “shower” and see what comes up. You could be surprised!!

Or, you can always boil some water and have an in-the-van bath if you have the space :)  This by the way is our folding bath (flexibath). It slides easily beside the fridge and opens up to big enough for even Roh and I to sit inside. It’s been awesome!!
