As we started to approach Albany (that’s AL-bany, not ALL-bany), we started looking for freecamps and were quite excited to see a couple on this side of town, but not too far away. We planned to check out all 3 but, once we arrived at East BayCampground in Two Peoples bay, we knew we weren’t going anywhere for a while.
It was just beyond words. What a bay. What a view. What a beach. And what an amazing place to set Ned up for a couple of days. It doesn’t get much better.
Then we saw the whales. Only 100m offshore, basically directly in front of Ned were a mum and calf Southern Right Whale. The mum was not wasting any time in teaching her young how to behave and so, we pulled out our chairs, sat outside Ned and watched. Spyhop, tail flap, deep dives, pec slaps. You name it, we watched it. It was amazing.
We spent 3 amazing days watching mum and bub, walking on the beach and watching Roh pretend to fish. We would have stayed longer but one of the locals told us the weather was about to turn, so we left. And boy did the weather turn! That was the last time we saw the sun for almost a month!!!
